Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My friend is a 20-year-old female. She is a beta-thalassemia minor carrier and her hemoglobin is 12.6 g/dl (gram per deciliter).
What does her report suggest?
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Based on the provided range, I cannot comment regarding the possibility of thalassemia minor. I need to know the MCV, and RBC count as well to comment further. So kindly attach your full CBC (complete blood count) report so that I can give more detailed comments.
I hope this is clear, and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
Do follow up whenever needed.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply,
Please find the attached reports and tell me if there is a possibility of her being a thalassemia minor.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Based on MCV (Mean corpuscular volume) and RBC (Red blood cell) count, the Mentzer index can be calculated, and further comments can be given. Although your reticulocyte and hemoglobin are within the limit. So the chance of thalassemia is less. But still, for further comment, I need RBC and MCV values as well. So you can ask the laboratory to provide these values as well, or else you can repeat your CBC.
If you want to rule out thalassemia 100 percent without taking any risk, then the gold standard test available is HB electrophoresis by HPLC (High-performance liquid chromatography method). HPLC can exclude thalassemia almost 100 percent If RBC and MCV values are available, then provide them so we can calculate the Mentzer index.
I hope this is clear, and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
Do follow up whenever needed.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
