Can benign fasciculation syndrome cause muscle twitching?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I was diagnosed with BFS five months ago, and I have had twitches all over my body since then, some days better, some days worse. I had taken EMG twice, both times only with fasciculations. I noticed a week ago that one of my left-hand fingers had begun to twitch, and I had been experiencing stress and anxiety a few days before the incident. So I also did some physical hand exercises. Could it be due to stress?

It starts twitching, especially before sleep or after I have ALS phobia, as my mother passed away from this illness this year. Should I try EMG again? I believe I have a high level of stress. Should I consider taking some relaxants?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I agree with you on the fact that anxiety plays an important role in all these clinical situations. For this reason, I recommend taking Clonazepam 1 mg twice daily to help improve both BFS (benign fasciculation syndrome) and anxiety. Some herbal supplements with Valeriana (Valerian) and Passiflora (passion flower) can help too. I also recommend checking thyroid hormone levels for possible thyroid gland dysfunction.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I was very much worried about the finger, hope it will reduce twitching. I had only twitched in my calves before.
