What are the possible causes of fluctuation in bilirubin levels?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My father suffered from non-alcoholic steatohepatitis with an acute attack of hepatitis E. The bilirubin fluctuates between 12 mg/dl and 13 mg/dl. Are readings normal?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

NASH (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis) and hepatitis E are both different conditions. Hepatitis E can also cause hepatitis. So, labeling NASH warrants proof. I am not concerned with his bilirubin levels. Let me know the following details:

1. AST (aspartate transaminase) /ALT (alanine transaminase) levels.

2. Any alteration of consciousness.

I need to rule out if he has acute liver failure. If you wish, you may discuss the whole thing with me in detail by phone.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
