I missed my period after stopping birth control. Am I pregnant?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 25 years old, and I have been taking birth control pills for years. I stopped taking it last year because my fiancé and I are trying to conceive. I did not have my period this month.

Am I pregnant, or is it a side effect of the birth control pills? I am also taking prenatal vitamins and thyroid tablets.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Birth control pills are hormones that prevent pregnancy. Once discontinued, it is difficult to predict how sooner or later someone will conceive. It depends on how regular your cycle was before starting the pill and the frequency of coitus.

You did not mention whether you have hyper or hypothyroidism. I suggest you wait for two weeks or get a blood test done for hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin).

Please avoid drinking, smoking, and taking antibiotics or painkillers.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
