Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My girlfriend and I had unprotected sex during our vacation last week. She took a morning-after pill right after, and we did not engage in any further sexual activity. This week is her period week, but so far, her period has not occurred. She is currently using birth control to prevent pregnancy.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq, and thank you for choosing us as your provider for health care.

I have gone through all your details and appreciate your concern.

Her periods are delayed because of the I-pill. Can you tell me two dates: the last period date and the date of intercourse? There was no need for the morning-after pill if you had unprotected sex during the safe period, which is seven days before and seven days after the period. Risky days are from the eighth day to the twentieth day, counting from the first day of the menstrual cycle.

Hope this helps you. Feel free to ask if you have any further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

The last period flow occurred at the end of the last week two months ago, and the spotting lasted for three days. The date of unprotected sex was a month ago. She used Plan B and is also on birth control.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is nothing to worry about. She is safe. You can stop the birth control pill, and her period will come.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you again for your time; I greatly appreciate it. Is there a reason why her period is delayed, though? Did taking Plan B affect her cycle? She is also starting a new cycle next week with her birth control.

Answered by Dr. Sunita Kothari

Hello,

Thanks for your follow-up question on icliniq.

As the birth control pill contains hormones, and the morning-after pill also contains a high dose of hormones, it can cause missed periods. Ask her to stop taking the birth control pill, and only then will she get her periods.

Hope this information helps. Thank you.
