I am 52. Any treatment options to preserve bladder function?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 52-year-old woman recently diagnosed with bladder cancer. I have had blood in my urine and frequent urination for months. My doctor is suggesting surgery followed by immunotherapy. I am scared about how this will affect my daily life and bladder control. I want to know how to manage both physically and emotionally.

Please tell me,

  1. Are there treatment options that preserve bladder function?

  2. What side effects should I expect, and can this cancer come back?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

First, I apologize for the delayed response. Second, I am sorry that you have been diagnosed with bladder cancer, but I would like to reassure you that there are many treatment options available, and they aim to preserve the bladder as it is. We do not prefer bladder surgery because, after surgery, the quality of life is usually not optimal, and biological control is not the best option, which negatively affects the patient’s quality of life.

We prefer what is called a bladder-preserving strategy, which involves the instillation of immunotherapy directly inside the bladder. The immunotherapy is injected into the bladder once a week for six weeks. After that, the condition usually improves significantly, and we can achieve full control of the cancer. This approach is much better than performing surgery. Of course, this is done after transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT), followed by regular follow-up. If immunotherapy or chemotherapy is needed later, it can be provided at any time.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
