What causes bleeding after sex without any symptoms?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had safe sex three days ago, and I started to bleed the next afternoon. I did not feel any pain or discomfort during intercourse, and I am not feeling any pain or discomfort now. There are clots in the blood. There is only bleeding and no unpleasant smell or discharge. The due date for my period is in 13 days.

I lost my virginity early last year. That was the only time I had unprotected sex, and the guy did not cum inside me. Every other intercourse I had was safe, and I have not used any birth control pills at any time. I have a hormonal imbalance, but I have not had any tests to determine the cause.

Still, I had been tested with sonography to find out about the cysts. This is how I discovered that my testosterone levels are higher than my estrogen levels and that I have cysts in my ovaries. Since it has been three days, the bleeding is making me anxious about what might be the cause.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have thoroughly read your query and understood your concern.

According to the query, there may be other reasons for your bleeding, and some diagnostic tests may be needed. Suppose the bleeding is related to cervical erosion.

In that case, there is a need to have a cervical pap smear test to find out any local pathology, like a cervical polyp or endometrial polyp. So better to have one outpatient hysteroscopic examination to know about any local pathology that might be present.

According to the information given, the bleeding is happening when it should not be because the next period is 13 days away. So, it is better to incorporate a few healthy lifestyle habits and take some precautions to regulate the cycles and maintain good health. So, I suggest you

  1. Have a healthy diet with less salt, sugar, and oil.
  2. Give some time for a walk in a day and exercise or yoga to maintain a healthy weight and BMI (body mass index).
  3. Have a vaginal swab test as well to exclude any pelvic infection.
  4. Maintain strict hygiene, wear soft, comfortable undergarments, and always use condoms during sex to avoid sexually transmitted infections.
  5. To be on the safe side, have one serum beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) to confirm pregnancy status or exclude pregnancy failure, which might cause bleeding.
  6. For now, if the pregnancy test comes back negative, you can take one tablet of Postan 500 mg every 8 hours and one tablet of Tranexamic acid 500 mg every eight hours for three to five days.
  7. Have all tests I advised above, cervical smear, high vaginal swab, outpatient hysteroscopic examination, and beta hCG (before taking medicine as above suggested to exclude pregnancy) as soon as possible.
  8. Collect the investigation's results and discuss them with the local gynecologist.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.
