My hCG levels are low. Is pregnancy possible after blighted ovum?

Hello doctor,

I had two consecutive blighted ovum a few years ago at six weeks. I had no other pregnancies or significant medical history. My blood group is O negative, and I received a RhoGam to both metacarpal bones.

I had spotted the first bowels open and sore breasts slightly in the morning sickness with the second bilateral ovum without spotting. I never got my hCG level tested with these pregnancies.

I recently had a negative pregnancy test next year and then a positive in the same year. I got my hCG and progesterone done; the result showed hCG of 12, and progesterone is 30.

My doctor suggested I take a tablet of 100 mg of Progesterone orally and asked me to come for a follow-up for a blood test on 2/20 for an hCG test. When I took another hCG test, the result was 58.

They wanted me to repeat hCG in three days. Do low numbers indicate bilateral ovaries?

Kindly suggest.

A blighted ovum is similar to an accident, and you have two such incidents. Let me start on a positive note that the Beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels are not low.

Do not go by the absolute values; in IVF, only rising rates are considered. Following the IVF procedure to detect whether you are pregnant, hCG values of about 10 IU (International units) are recommended. The rate of rise is an important factor in IVF (in vitro fertilization) procedures.

After 48 hours, the value has to be doubled, and this occurred in your case, which is a positive sign. The hCG levels are 12 on the 16th, and the ideal levels are 24 on the 18th; levels should be greater than 50 on the 20th.

So your graph is reassuring. Keep taking those medications and take very good care of yourself. Make sure to get yourself tested for blood sugar levels and thyroid profile. Any deviation in these levels is an undiagnosed cause of early abortion.

All I can say now is that your baby's hormone levels are good, but the most important criterion that we look for is the heartbeat, which is normally felt at six weeks of pregnancy. Be patient, trust the process, and hope for cardiac flicker.
