Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My boyfriend and I have the same blood group that is B positive. I am concerned about whether the same blood group will affect our child in the future. Will the child suffer from thalassemia? Can a newborn develop any abnormalities if the parents have a similar blood group?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

People with the same blood group can marry and have children without any complications. So do not worry as far as the same blood group is concerned. However, genetic counseling can be done to rule out thalassemia before planning your wedding if you are a relative.

So I suggest you to check for Hb (hemoglobin) electrophoresis test by HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) method to rule out thalassemia minor.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
