Will the baby get affected if both the parents have the same blood type?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My fiance and I have the same blood group that is B positive. Will it affect our baby?

I am in great trouble right now. How could I give a clear explanation to my father about this issue? My father told me he knows a couple of the same positive blood group who has been married for ten years without having a baby. And doctors could not find any problems for both men or women. But their blood immune system did not match to have a baby.

I have these questions:

Does the same blood group create a problem? If yes, then what creates problems?

Are there any precautions to consider for having a baby after getting married with the same blood group, B positive?

Are the diseases like thalassemia occurring because of parent's rhesus factors?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern. In the same blood group, people can marry and can produce an average child.

The same blood group people can marry.

That couple might have another cause of infertility.

Before marriage, rule out thalassemia minor by HB (hemoglobin) electrophoresis by HPLC method (high-performance liquid chromatography).

Provide your CBC or HPLC report to comment on that.

As far as the blood group is concerned, do not worry about that.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
