Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had sex a few days ago and took an oral contraceptive pill the next day's afternoon. My period cycle was due the next day I took the oral contraceptive pill. I had spotting on the day the period was due but I did not experience the regular period. What does it mean?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Hope you are doing fine. Oral contraceptives are a high dose of progesterone hormone, the same hormone which is produced in your body in the second half of the period after ovulation. This pill will suddenly increase the thickness of the inner lining of the uterus, making it unfavorable for a possible pregnancy to implant. As it is a single dose, it has no strength to stand on, so it falls off and you get period or bleeding of the increased thickness within seven to ten days of taking the oral contraceptive pill. This bleeding will be thick, consisting of fleshy pieces, dark red or brown, with slight lower abdominal pain till the bleeding is really reduced. For every lady, ovulation is around the 12th to 16th day of the period. The egg has a life of 24 hours and that of sperm is 72 hours. So there was no need to take the oral contraceptive pill. The egg will anyway not be available on one to two days before periods and sperm will not be alive till the next ovulation. So just relax and wait for seven to ten days, you will get periods within this time.I hope I have clarified your query, do write back if any more queries.

All the best.

Regards.

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Please advise me which is the most fertile duration of the mensuration cycle. What is the first day of the cycle considered? Also, the spotting has continued for three days now but does not feel like a regular period. How long will this continue? Will the normal period start? Can you send a link where more information is available to read up on these aspects?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

How are you doing? The day bleeding starts is considered the first day of periods. The day of ovulation is to be calculated individually. Ovulation day is determined based on your period's duration. For a lady with 28 days cycle, ovulation will be on day 14, that is 14 days before periods. So if your cycle is regularly 30 days, ovulation is on day 16, and so on. The first day of bleeding is day one of the menstrual cycle. Now if your cycle is irregular, the calculation is the longest cycle minus eight, or the longest cycle minus 11 is the duration of ovulation. For example, if your longest cycle is 34 days and your shortest cycle is 27 days then,34-8 = 26, 27-11 = 16 (So your ovulation will be between 16-26 )

The life of an egg is 24 hours and that of sperm is 72 hours, so with this, you can calculate the days when the egg will be available for the sperm. You can just search for the same on any medical website. As I mentioned previously, if you had not taken the pill, you might have had the periods by now. Mostly the periods started in the form of spots, this might have kept coming till the proper bleeding, but the bleeding further was stopped by the pill. So you are not getting the periods even now. As you had the pill a day before your period was due, most periods will be around seven to eight days after that. No one can predict exactly when you will get bleeding.

My previous reply was quite explanatory.

I hope I have clarified your query, do write back if any more queries

All the best.
