How can I stop boils from returning on my left buttock?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a boil on my left bum. It only happens after the boil has drained, which was in between but above the anus.

The fact is, it only happens on the left. It is usually very itchy and has a soft spot somewhere. But my ass is always itchy. Additionally, my upper body sometimes experiences a burning sensation.

Before it reappeared, I had done intense lifting to a three-story building using stairs. I lifted some cement and tiles on my shoulder. Previously, I had a boil that was drained; it took time to heal.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

I understand how uncomfortable and worrying this situation must be for you, especially since it keeps recurring and affects your daily comfort.

Based on what you have described, a recurrent painful or soft swelling on the same side of the buttock near the anus, especially after heavy physical activity and sweating, can be due to conditions such as recurrent boils or furunculosis (getting three or more painful, pus-filled hair follicle infections in a year), an infected hair follicle (inflammation or infection of the tiny pockets where hair grows), or sometimes an early pilonidal or perianal sinus (a small tunnel/hole in the skin) or abscess.

The constant itching around the anal area can be due to moisture, sweating, a fungal infection, irritation from previous inflammation, or post-healing skin sensitivity. Scratching further worsens itching and can delay proper healing.

The burning sensation over the upper body, especially when lying down and covered, can sometimes be related to heat intolerance, sweating, nerve irritation, or general skin sensitivity rather than being directly linked to the boil.

To provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan, please send a clear picture of the affected area, taken under good lighting.

Treatment may vary and can include targeted antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, medicated creams, or a minor surgical opinion if sinus or abscess removal is required. Until then, I am providing general management advice.

  1. Keep the area clean and dry.

  2. Avoid heavy lifting and friction.

  3. Do not squeeze or scratch the area.

  4. Wear loose, breathable clothing.

  5. Avoid harsh soaps and opt for a gentle cleanser instead.

  6. Apply a good moisturizer to the affected area where you feel itching, both during the day and at night.

  7. If itching is severe, you may take a 10 mg Cetirizine tablet at bedtime for 10 days.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
