Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My father had paralysis on his left leg and left hand four days back during nighttime. We approached the neurologist in the daytime. The MRI scan reports showed blood clotting in the in the brain in five spots. But after treatment for four days in the hospital, there was no movement in the leg and hand.
What should we do? Can physiotherapy help? What is the span to cure? If it occurs after the cure in the future, what should we do if we notice it immediately? Please suggest.
Thank you.
Hello
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Acute stroke is primarily of two types-
1. Ischemic (in which there is a blockage to the blood supply to any area of the brain due to a clot inside the blood vessel).
2. Hemorrhagic (in which there is bleeding inside the brain tissue).
After the window period (4.5 hours for ischemic stroke), initial management focuses on blood pressure and sugar control with good nursing care and physiotherapy, along with observation for any deterioration. Many patients deteriorate in the initial two to four days due to the development of edema inside the brain, which may need treatment in the form of medicines or sometimes brain surgery.
Recovery from power is a slow process and may take a few weeks to a few months. Only with time can we know how much recovery patients are getting. None can predict the exact time frame.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards.
