How to identify signs of a breast lump in fibroadenoma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had breast surgery to remove a fibroadenoma lump from my right breast. Within days after the breast surgery, a new lump appeared suddenly in my right breast. I did a biopsy on the new lump, and it is benign. For many years, the new lump has been stable in size and not growing. However, this year, the new lump started growing bigger and laterally in size. The description of the new lump given in the ultrasound is a mildly hypoechoic, gently lobulated solid nodule. Please refer to the attached file for my ultrasound report.

  1. May I know what this new lump is? Is the new lump a fibroadenoma, fat necrosis, or scar tissue?
  2. Why did the lump appear suddenly within days after my breast surgery?
  3. If I decided to keep the lump in my breast and not do any surgery to remove it, would it lead to breast cancer?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

A hypoechoic smooth (gently) lobulated solid nodule shows that there are chances of it being a fibroadenoma. Fibroadenoma turning into cancer is very unusual. The above statement is based only on ultrasound and your history description.

But you better consult a local surgeon for a physical examination of the breast and axillae (armpit) to rule out any lymph node enlargement because nothing is mentioned in the ultrasound reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) about lymph nodes.

If you have a family history of cancer. It is better if the lump in the breast is removed as soon as possible.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert if there are any queries.
