Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My daughter's best friend was just diagnosed with papillary breast cancer at only 26 years old. It was such a shock. Her ultrasound revealed a small, 1.2-inch tumor with distinct papillary features, and the biopsy confirmed it as a rare subtype of pure papillary carcinoma. Her genetic testing came back negative.
Please answer a few of my questions:
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I am so sorry to hear about your daughter’s best friend’s diagnosis of pure papillary carcinoma of the breast. This rare subtype accounts for about 1 to 2 percent of all breast cancers and is often slow-growing with distinct papillary features. Her small tumor size (1.2 inches) and clear genetic tests are encouraging signs.
Papillary carcinomas generally have a better prognosis than other types, with early detection and appropriate treatment offering excellent outcomes. Survival rates for localized disease are close to 100 percent, and hormone therapy may be effective since these cancers are often estrogen (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) positive.
Fertility preservation is an important consideration for young women undergoing cancer treatment. Options like egg or embryo freezing and ovarian suppression should be discussed with a fertility specialist before starting therapy.
Treatment for papillary carcinoma often involves surgery (lumpectomy or mastectomy), radiation therapy, and possibly hormone therapy, while chemotherapy is less commonly required. It is natural to feel overwhelmed, but with the right medical team, supportive resources, and open communication, her chances for recovery and a good quality of life are very high.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
