Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 19 years old and recently noticed a small, hard lump near my nipple, which has made me quite concerned. While searching online, I came across information about breast cancer in males, and now I am unsure what to think.
I understand that breast cancer is rare in males, especially at my age, but the lump feels unusual and has not gone away. There is no pain, but it is noticeable.
I do not want to ignore something important.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern regarding this lump. A hard lump in the breast area can have several causes. While cancer is unlikely at your age, it is important not to ignore it and to get it properly evaluated.
The possible causes include:
Gynecomastia (an increase in glandular tissue due to hormonal changes), which may feel firm or rubbery.
Benign lumps such as cysts or minor trauma.
Lipoma (usually soft in consistency).
Infection or inflammation (less likely in your case, as there are no signs like pain or redness).
Breast cancer (rare, but needs to be ruled out).
But do not worry. We cannot decide with this alone. But you should be aware of the warning signs of breast cancer, like a painless, hard lump with irregular borders, rapid increase in size, skin changes, nipple retraction, or discharge.
If you notice any of these, please visit a doctor and get it checked.
It is advisable not to wait and to consult a general surgeon for evaluation. Breast lumps are usually assessed with a triple assessment approach:
Clinical examination.
Imaging (ultrasound is preferred at your age).
Tissue testing (fine needle aspiration or biopsy if required).
Further management will depend on the findings of these assessments.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
