Is a brown discharge after unprotected sex suggestive of implantation bleeding?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female, I have very irregular periods. Sometimes they continued for months and sometimes they did not even come. One week back my boyfriend tried to have intercourse with me but it was my first time so it hurt so badly then he stopped. He did not use any contraceptives. And he says that he did not ejaculate and also he did not get any precum. But still, I was so stressed so I took an emergency contraceptive pill. After one week, today I observed a little brown discharge. What does that mean? In this Google, I found that it may be the implantation of blood. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern and I am here to help you. First and foremost I would like to advise you to go with serum B hCG if you do not have periods within a month. Because having irregular periods can put you at risk of pregnancy when not using contraception, (because sometimes there are minute secretions that have sperm). I appreciate you used the emergency pill, but when we have irregular periods there is no exact date of ovulation, so basically if ovulation has occurred, a pill would not benefit. I would suggest you go for some blood tests on the second day of periods in 10 to 12 hours of fasting, to find out the cause of delayed and irregular periods if you have your periods. Otherwise, I will suggest some medicine to reduce bleeding. Tests like,

1. TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone).

2. FSH (follicle stimulating hormone).

3. LH (luteinizing hormone).

4. Serum fasting insulin.

5. Prolactin.

6. Ultrasound pelvis.

Then we can treat them accordingly. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
