This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have never had regular periods, but this recent one, which I had about three weeks ago, ended after six days, then I started having brown discharge, which was not unusual for me, but now it has continued for three weeks, and I still have occasional red spotting.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am deeply concerned about your worries.

From what you describe, the most likely cause is a hormonal imbalance, commonly seen in women with irregular periods. Your ongoing brown discharge with occasional red spotting for three weeks suggests prolonged or irregular shedding of the uterine lining rather than a normal cycle.

Given your history of irregular periods and weight, one important possibility is polycystic ovary syndrome. This condition can cause:

  • Irregular ovulation.

  • Prolonged spotting or brown discharge.

  • Occasional temperature fluctuations.

Other possible causes include:

  • Anovulatory cycles, in which no egg is released.

  • Thyroid hormone imbalance.

  • Endometrial overgrowth from unopposed estrogen.

  • Less commonly, infection or early pregnancy-related issues.

This is not immediately dangerous, but continuous bleeding for three weeks is not normal and needs evaluation.

Let me tell you what you should do next

  • Take a urine pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy.

  • Get an ultrasound of the pelvis to check the uterus and ovaries.

  • Check blood tests, including thyroid function and hormones.

  • Consult a gynecologist for cycle regulation.

If bleeding continues, treatment may include a short course of progesterone to reset your cycle. Seek urgent care if you develop heavy bleeding, soaking pads, severe pain, dizziness, or weakness.

If you want, I can guide you step by step on which tests to prioritize first and how treatment usually works.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
