What could cause a small bump near my penis for 3 to 4 days?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have noticed a small bump around my penis area for the past three to four days. I have not had any sexual activity, so I am not sure why this happened. Could you please help me with this?

I started applying Fucidin today.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for sharing the photo and explaining your concern so honestly. I understand this can feel worrying, especially when the lesion appears suddenly and is in the sensitive genital area.

From the photo, the lesion is a small superficial pustule or inflamed follicle in the shaft, which is most consistent with folliculitis or a blocked sebaceous gland. This commonly happens due to friction, sweating, tight clothing, shaving or trimming, minor bacterial infection, or local irritation. It can occur even in people who are not sexually active. The location near the penile skin is sensitive and prone to such minor infections.

It does not resemble genital warts (HPV), which are usually multiple, rough, and cauliflower like, nor does it look like herpes, which presents as painful grouped blisters, or syphilis, which causes a painless ulcer rather than a small bump with a white head aid I assure you that you do not need to worry, it's a benign condition and nothing to be worried about.

You have already started Fucidin (Fusidic acid), which is appropriate for a mild bacterial skin infection. Apply a thin layer twice daily for five to seven days only. Do not squeeze, prick, or press the bump, as this can worsen inflammation and delay healing. Keep the area clean and dry, wash gently with plain water or a mild soap, and avoid tight underwear; loose cotton underwear is best for now.

Most lesions settle within five to ten days. You should see a gradual reduction in size, redness, and tenderness. If it increases in size, becomes very painful, starts oozing pus, multiplies, or does not improve after a week of treatment, you need additional oral antibiotics for fast recovery. For pain, you can take Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) 500 mg twice a day for three to five days. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take the medicines with their consent.

I hope it helped with your query

Thank you.
