Can keeping the plaster dry, elevating the hand, and exercising nearby joints help improve blood supply to the casted area?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a broken thumb, and I have been in a cast on my hand for two weeks now, but it is starting to feel tight. Is it still swelling? Should I be concerned? I am taking pain reliever medications (a combination of Oxycodone or Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen), and X-rays have been taken.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, it is something to worry about as the blood supply to the hand can be reduced due to the swelling. You need to visit your doctor as soon as possible. Continue taking your tablets. I will provide you with some general plaster recommendations:

  1. Keep the plaster dry.

  2. Avoid getting the cast or slab wet in water.

  3. During bathing, cover it with a plastic bag or plaster cast bag and secure it at the top with tape.

  4. Ensure that no objects are placed inside the plaster.

  5. Always keep the hand elevated to help reduce swelling.

  6. Check for any discoloration in the toes or fingers. If you have any doubts, contact your doctor or visit the nearest emergency department.

  7. Refrain from participating in any active sports.

  8. Inform the doctor in case of any foul smell or liquid staining of the plaster or if you experience tightness.

  9. Exercise all the nearby joints that are not immobilized by the cast.

Please note that this professional advice I am providing is subject to the actual examination of your report or image and is based entirely on the inputs you have provided to me. It should be correlated with clinical findings from your healthcare provider.

Thanks and regards.
