Is it okay for the skin to turn dark after treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have gone through three sittings of black peel for my under eye and face I have some pimple spots and very dark pigmentation around my eyes. Could you tell me how long will it take to recover after the peel? Is it normal for the skin to turn dark even after 10 days after the peel?

Kindy help.

Hello,

Welcome to iciniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. Dark circle under the eyes or periocular hyperpigmentation is a common cosmetic concern, especially in females. Common causes of the dark circle are genetic, vascular, and extension of the pigmentary demarcation line. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation due to continuous rubbing of eyes in allergic conjunctivitis and because of atopic dermatitis. Lack of adequate sleep, stress, etc. Chemical peels act through exfoliation, abrasion, and shedding of the superficial skin cells followed by remodeling without scarring. But sun protection is a must other it will lead to further darkening, or sometimes lead to irritant contact dermatitis, in your case this may be the cause. I suggest you to follow a few instructions mentioned below.

  1. Avoid mid-day sun especially from 10 AM to 4 PM.
  2. Seek shade whenever possible.
  3. Wear broad-brimmed hats.
  4. Apply Suncros soft gel sunscreen (Cyclopentasiloxane, Zinc Oxide, C-12-15 Alkyl Benzoate) with SPF 50 daily in the morning all over the face can be repeated after 4 hours.
  5. It usually takes six sittings of chemical peels required to show the result.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
