How do I overcome the chest pain associated with overeating?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 21 years old, and I have a question about my heart. So today, I have decided that I am going to start dieting, and the reason is I have been overeating. It is almost like I cannot stop eating. And I feel like it is beginning to cause chest pain. I was just wondering if losing weight can get rid of this pain and make my heart healthier. I am scared that I will have a heart attack one day. I believe I gained about eight pounds in the last two weeks. Do you have any tips to help me out? I would appreciate it so much. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern. I do not think your pain is related to the heart. However, it has multiple causes. It seems like gastritis and acid reflux disease are its causes. However, do you have upper abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, burping, increased pain after consuming food, a sour feeling in the throat, or a burning sensation in the chest? If yes, it further supports the diagnosis. So, kindly follow the instructions mentioned below. You should avoid eating fat-rich foods and oily and high-calorie diets. Go for a walk after eating food instead of resting. Have multiple small meals instead of heavy meals. Develop regular sleep habits and avoid stress. Eat lots of green vegetables and fruits. Avoid smoking and alcohol, if any.

I suggest you take a tablet with a combination of Pantoprazole and Domperidone 40 mg tablet before breakfast once a day for two weeks. Secondly, does this pain increase when pressure is applied over the area? If yes, it could be costochondritis, a musculoskeletal type of pain requiring prolonged NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) therapy. Kindly consult a specialist, talk with them, and take the medications with their consent. I hope this helps you out. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
