Is it possible to get chikungunya through cold?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My mother is 45 years old. She suffers from chikungunya. She got this problem due to cold. Please suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Chikungunya is caused due to chikungunya virus, and it spreads through mosquitoes. It is not caused due to cold. You can have better prevention by having mosquito control. Mosquito control focuses on eliminating the standing water where mosquitoes lay eggs, and develops as a larva. You can also have mosquito control by using insecticides and insect repellants. Fever and joint pain are the main symptoms. It lasts for a week. NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), Naproxen can be taken, or you can take Paracetamol for fever and pain. Fluids can also be taken.
