Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My son is struggling with obesity. He is having a tough time at school, other kids are being unkind, and he is unable to keep up during physical education. I have noticed he sneaks food at night, and his blood pressure is elevated.
He has been feeling down since his father left, and I believe he may be using food to cope emotionally. The school counselor has recommended professional support, but unfortunately, our insurance does not cover it.
What is the most effective and realistic way to help him lose weight and improve his overall well-being?
I would appreciate your guidance.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I completely understand your worries.
Your son's weight challenges appear to stem from more than just diet or physical activity. Emotional, environmental, and even genetic factors can play a significant role. The impact of bullying at school, emotional stress related to his father's absence, and emotional eating are all important contributors.
I recommend starting with a full evaluation by his pediatrician to rule out underlying health conditions such as hypothyroidism, insulin resistance, or other metabolic concerns. It is also important to consider emotional factors like depression or anxiety that may be affecting his behavior and eating habits.
If insurance coverage is an issue, explore free or low-cost support through school counselors, local community health clinics, or youth wellness programs. Making gradual lifestyle changes can be more effective than quick fixes. Start by establishing regular, balanced meals, reducing access to unhealthy snacks at night, and encouraging physical activity through enjoyable outlets like family walks, swimming, or sports he is interested in.
Most importantly, create a home environment that is supportive and positive, one that focuses on health and emotional well-being, not just weight.
I hope this information is helpful.
Please feel free to follow up with any additional questions.
Thank you.
