Is Zoxan treatment effective for long-term ear discomfort?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been experiencing an ear problem for several years. It started after I used tools to clean my ear, and since then, I have been feeling discomfort. In my place, I was given Zoxan as a treatment. I have been using Zoxan as prescribed. Please suggest a solution for this.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I hope you are doing well.

I have thoroughly reviewed your concern and situation.

Based on the duration of your symptoms, it appears that you are dealing with a chronic problem. It could potentially be chronic mastoiditis, chronic otitis media, or another condition. To address your condition effectively, it is crucial for you to consult with an ENT (ear-nose-throat) physician. They will be able to conduct a proper examination of your ear, specifically checking your tympanic membrane for any signs of exudate. Additionally, a CT (computerized tomography) imaging scan may be necessary to rule out complications and determine the underlying cause of your chronic infection. It is possible that your current infection is a result of suboptimal treatment of the initial infection you experienced two years ago. Although Zoxan (Ciprofloxacin eye or ear drops) is commonly used to treat ear infections, the lack of response you have experienced suggests that the bacteria causing the infection may be resistant to it.

Therefore, it is advisable to have an ear swab performed to identify the specific bacteria involved. These diagnostic measures will enable the healthcare professional to establish an accurate diagnosis and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Treating the infection blindly with antibiotics may worsen the situation if the bacteria are not effectively targeted. I hope this information has been helpful to you. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am always here to assist you.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Thanks and regards.
