I have cirrhosis. What do my blood test results indicate?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have cirrhosis. Can you please explain my blood test results and what it means?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You have a history of binge drinking and having abdominal pain on the left side, which is more suggestive of alcohol-induced gastritis. Regular alcohol consumption for more than 15 to 20 years will gradually damage the liver and lead to cirrhosis of the liver. In your case, your ALT levels were normal on both occasions. If you want to make sure, what is your exact liver status? Fibroscan (another simple ultrasound-like test) can provide liver fibrosis (damage) to the liver in numerical value. Considering your age and history of binge drinking. I do not think you are having cirrhosis.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you very much for your detailed response.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Regarding your abdominal pain, I would suggest avoiding binge drinking if possible.

  1. You can take antacid syrup like Gaviscon 10 ml after every meal and as per need.
  2. Acid suppression medicine (proton pump inhibitors) like the tablet Pantoprazole 40 mg a half hour before breakfast for 10 to 14 days as it would improve gastritis and may relieve your left-sided abdominal pain.
  3. Frequent eating out or eating reheated meals would be another risk factor for stomach pain, if such risk factors are present one can avoid it.
  4. The use of simple painkillers is common, but NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Ibuprofen, etc. can lead to gastritis too.
  5. Usually do not fill your stomach at once, I mean you can have frequent small meals or at least leave little space in your stomach while having meals. This would reduce the chances of gastritis too.

The above explanation is just to highlight common causes of stomach pain, and some simple medications which could help you to relieve your pain and get better.

I hope this helps.
