What causes ear throbbing after the blockage clears?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have had clogged ears for almost two months now, and my ear unclogged two days ago since then I have been getting pain and the throbbing almost like heart pulse in my ear and it stops and starts again, I have some antibiotic drops and nose spray that I am taking but I do not know how to get rid of the throbbing sound in my ear.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I read your query and understand your concern.
The throbbing, pulse-like sound in your ear after clogged ears clear up is likely pulsatile tinnitus. The most possible causes include vascular issues like altered blood flow from atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, or vessel abnormalities near the ear, especially post-eustachian tube changes.
However, the primary causes of pulsatile tinnitus often stem from blood flow turbulence in arteries or veins, such as narrowed carotid arteries, aneurysms, or venous sinus issues.
After prolonged clogging, middle ear pressure shifts or conductive hearing changes can amplify heartbeat sounds. There are also other factors like anemia, thyroid issues, or tumors pressing on vessels that can be a causative agent.
But still, for proper evaluation, I suggest you seek an ear endoscopic examination to visualize the ear canal, drum, and middle ear for abnormalities like inflammation or structural issues. Also, this test can be paired with audiological investigations like pure-tone audiometry, tympanometry, and speech tests to assess hearing loss or eustachian dysfunction.
These pinpoint vascular versus non-vascular origins. And the next steps you should follow are to continue antibiotic drops and nasal spray short-term, but I strongly suggest you consult an ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist promptly.
These tests guide targeted treatment, like managing blood pressure or addressing vessels. Avoid self-treatment; pulsatile tinnitus warrants ruling out serious causes.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
