Is there a permanent treatment to stop excessive sweating in the extremities?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I experience excessive sweating in my hands and feet. I have been suffering from this problem since my childhood. So I underwent the iontophoresis treatment, which is an effective but temporary treatment. Also, I am trying for a new job. So, I would like to know if there is a permanent solution.

Kindly give me a solution.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating is one of the common disorders of sweat glands. It can cause trouble to the extent that one can feel embarrassed while shaking hands, and individuals usually avoid touching, leading to social seclusion or other symptoms of social anxiety disorders. Hyperhidrosis can be primary or secondary. Primary focal hyperhidrosis can be caused by anxiety-related issues or can be hereditary. The affected individuals may have a family history of hyperhidrosis. The symptoms appear in childhood or around puberty and may persist for years, with some spontaneous improvement occurring after age 35. At the same time, secondary causes of focal hyperhidrosis can be due to various reasons, like cerebral infarction or stroke, spinal cord injury, etc.

Palmoplantar hyperhidrosis can be controlled by applying Aluminum Chloride (Aldry) lotion. So I suggest you to apply the lotion twice daily for two to three months. Other treatment options available are iontophoresis or intradermal injection of Botulinum toxin type A, which is appropriate for the focal area and is effective for 2 to 8 months.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk with them and take the medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Take care.
