Hi doctor,

I am concerned about my son’s health. He is 14 years old and has been getting cold every once in two to three months. We mostly give him over-the-counter cold medications, and his symptoms get relieved. However, I am worried that these medications might cause harm. What are the best remedies to help him recover from a cold? What medications should we avoid during cold symptoms? What would be the effective medications for treating the common cold? Also, how can we avoid such recurrent cold symptoms? Please help.

With the symptoms you mentioned, the primary problem appears to be seasonal allergies. Taking over-the-counter medications every time there is an upper respiratory allergic inflammation will invite resistance to those medications and unnecessary side effects. Seasonal rhinitis cannot be removed but can be controlled by specific measures.

1. General dietary habits have to be improved. Exposure to cold, spicy, junk, preserved, ground processed meat, etc, will cause raised free radicals, further promoting body inflammation and allergic tendencies.

2. Avoid exposure to environmental agents such as dust, fumes, and pollens, which could create inflammation in the nose. Pets, plants, and molds are other known factors that cause trouble. 3. Certain topical sprays are available and can be used for three weeks whenever weather changes occur. 4. Salt water gargles five to six times a day and sipping on boiled warm water every two hours should reduce inflammation around the upper respiratory tract area.

5. Kindly check the vitamin D3 and B12 levels, and in case of deficiency, appropriate correction will be required.

6. Add moderate fruits and green leafy vegetables to the diet, which he tolerates. This will provide essential antioxidants to reduce the free radicals in the body, thereby increasing the effectiveness of preventive care and topical medications.
