Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My brother had surgery two times already, once for a pilonidal cyst and another for an anal rectal fistula. Now, he is having some issues again. Is this normal after colorectal cancer treatment?
I wonder if the surgery for rectal cancer treatment has anything to do with these problems coming back. He is feeling pain again after the operations, and I do not know if he needs to go back to an oncology specialist for this or if it is something else.
Could these problems get worse over time?
How long does it take for these to heal completely after surgery?
What is the risk of having these surgeries again?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
It is not uncommon for people who have had colorectal cancer treatment and surgery to experience anal fistulas or pilonidal cysts.
The area around the rectum and anus is delicate and can become more prone to infections, fistulas, or abscesses after surgeries.
Colorectal cancer treatment, especially if it involves radiation or more extensive surgery, can also weaken the tissues in this area, making complications like these more likely to recur.
Pain after surgery indicates that the issue has not fully healed.
For a pilonidal cyst or an anal fistula, complete healing can take weeks to months. Consult both a colorectal specialist and his oncologist.
The risk of additional surgeries depends on his individual condition. Repeated surgeries in the same area do carry risks, including infection, delayed healing, and further scarring.
A physical examination by a doctor in a hospital is a must.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
