What medications can help manage my sexual deviancy?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 20 years old, female, 5 feet 2 inches tall, and weigh 77 pounds. I experience sexual deviancy and urges. I want to seek treatment, but I am not currently taking any medication, so I am unsure which medicine to ask for. What medications are used to treat these types of disorders, and how effective are they?
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Having strong sexual thoughts or urges by themselves does not automatically mean there is a disorder. Treatment is usually considered only when the urges become distressing, difficult to control, interfere with daily life, relationships, safety, or cause unwanted behaviors.
Conditions such as compulsive sexual behavior disorder are typically managed first with psychological therapy, stress management, and identifying triggers rather than immediately starting medication.
When medication is needed, psychiatrists sometimes use selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as Fluoxetine or Sertraline, because they may help reduce obsessive thoughts, compulsive behavior, and sexual urges in some people.
In more difficult situations, other medications may be considered under specialist supervision, but the correct treatment depends on the exact nature of the urges, mental health history, anxiety level, mood symptoms, and whether the urges are causing harmful behavior.
These medicines can be effective for many patients, but they should only be started after a proper psychiatric assessment because they can also cause side effects and may not be suitable for everyone.
It would help to understand more clearly whether these urges are mainly intrusive thoughts causing distress, difficulty controlling masturbation or sexual behavior, or attractions and fantasies that are causing concern.
I hope this is clear, and if you have any questions at any time, please feel free to ask.
Thank you.
