Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had constipation for the past year, and the symptom relieves by taking Isabgol powder 20 gm or Cremafin syrup (almost every night). I might have been symptom-free only for about 15 days during this period. Medications like Softovac and Kabz Har are also effective.

I have had no weight loss, gas formation, or blood in the stool. I had blood work done - KFT (kidney function test), LFT (liver function test), and CBC (complete blood count), and they came back normal. In addition, I had a CT contrast scan done. It showed no abnormalities except a few colonic diverticula. I have tried taking a fiber diet and have increased my water intake. I have been exercising regularly for half an hour every day for the past 20 years. I have had this issue since childhood but was fine in between.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern regarding constipation without any alarming signs and symptoms like weight loss or gastrointestinal bleeding.

The way you are managing the issue seems right. Your gut might be relatively slow naturally as you have had this issue since childhood, so the simple remedies should be continued. Does constipation worsen with stress or unfavorable conditions? Do you have a family history of gut-related diseases such as cancer or tuberculosis?

I suggest you to follow a few instructions mentioned below.

    1. Continue with Ispaghol husk (laxative).
    2. Increase water and fresh vegetables (green leafy) intake.
    3. Invasive procedures such as colonoscopy are not required (as you do not have any alarming symptoms).
    4. Get checked for thyroid problems, and test your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels.
      • I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

My thyroid is normal, and I have no family history of tuberculosis or other issues. Constipation worsens with travel and disturbed sleep. My CT scan report said it was normal (except for a few diverticula). Does it mean my bowels are otherwise normal other than the presence of diverticula?

Answered by Dr. Ghulam Fareed

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is good if your CT (computerized tomography) scan is normal (other than the diverticula). Diverticula can be seen in patients after the age of 40 years who have a history of constipation. I suggest you follow the instructions that I mentioned before. Avoid stress and try to have a proper diet and sleep.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
