Can frequent shaving cause rashes under my armpit?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I recently noticed a rash near my armpit, where my bra cup reaches. It does not irritate me at all. I only get a slight itch whenever my bra touches it. I also noticed that the next rash is developing under my other armpit at the back and right where my bra band is. I think my bra causes it. Or maybe shaving because I shave there a lot, and I am not sure. What is the cause of the rash? How can I get rid of it?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. The rash you have described could be anything from irritant contact dermatitis to a cloth or buckle rash, pityriasis versicolor, tinea corporis, erythrasma, acanthosis nigricans, and candidal intertrigo. It is very difficult for me to say what is causing this problem to you without seeing your clinical picture. Kindly attach your clinical picture along with your query so that it is convenient for me to comment on your condition and prescribe you medication. However, I would like to mention a few general skin care tips. Always wear cotton inner wear. It should be completely dry when you wear it. Use a good moisturizing soap. It keeps your skin hydrated. If you sweat a lot, use antifungal dusting powder after bath for the skin folds like armpits, below the breasts, and thigh fold. Take a bath with lukewarm water. Never use hot water. Hot water dries out the skin quickly. Never scratch the skin. Scratching makes the skin condition even worse.
