What are the contraceptive methods available for women to prevent pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a married woman. My husband wants to avoid pregnancy for a few years. I usually take emergency contraceptive pills after unprotected sexual intercourse, but I conceived even after using them. My husband does not want to use condoms. Can you please explain the other contraceptive methods?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You can have a wide choice of contraceptives that are convenient for you. It could be pills, implants, injections, intrauterine devices, etc.

(Consult your specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.)

  1. Oral contraceptive pills consist of estrogen, progestogen, and progesterone-only pills. You can have a tablet daily. However, do not use combined pills in case of hypertension, liver disease, migraine, a history of clot formation, breast cancer, cigarette smoking, or SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus).
  2. Implants are devices inserted in the arm that secrete hormones cyclically.
  3. Injection Medroxyprogesterone is very convenient and easy to have. You can take one injection for 12 weeks, and then, after 12 weeks, you can have the next shot. The mild side effect of this injection is irregular bleeding or weight gain if taken for a long time, and it differs from person to person.
  4. Intrauterine contraceptive devices can also be inserted for three years. It is safe, with the least side effects, and can be removed conveniently.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out in case of further queries.

Thank you.
