Is pregnancy possible after taking Unwanted-72 pill after unprotected sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My girlfriend had her menses last month. We had unprotected sex at the beginning of this month, and she took Unwanted-72 in two hours. Is there any chance of pregnancy? We are scared. Kindly help us.

Answered by Dr. Reetika

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I fully understand your concern and will surely help you. With her last menses in the previous month, your girlfriend was nearing the ovulation phase at the beginning of this month, and unprotected intercourse would have resulted in an unplanned pregnancy. So it is good that she took the emergency contraceptive pill within two hours. It is best effective when taken on time, as early as possible after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. To get pregnant, the sperm must be released inside the vagina of the female. These sperms then need to fertilize an egg which may or may not be available depending upon the ovulation pattern of the female. The fertilized egg is then required to be implanted in the uterus of the female. When all this happens successfully, a female is said to have conceived. Now let me explain that the emergency contraceptive pill acts at three different stages to prevent pregnancy. Firstly it prevents the release of an egg from the ovary, so when there is no egg, even if sperms are there, fertilization will not occur. Secondly, if the egg is released before taking the pill, it prevents fertilization by thickening the fluid around the egg. Third, if the egg was fertilized before taking the pill, it makes the uterus lining improper for implantation of the fertilized egg. Thus the emergency contraceptive pill acts at three different stages to prevent pregnancy. Also, let me tell you that your girlfriend may have some side effects, like nausea, headache, and slight bleeding in eight to ten days. Do not worry, and feel free to ask questions or share any additional information.

Take care, and God bless.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Please tell me how many percentage chances there are for pregnancy. I am very tense. She has an average thirty-day cycle. Can you please tell me if abortion can be done for unmarried girls just in case? Please suggest me a solution.

Answered by Dr. Reetika

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As explained above, pregnancy is very complex and requires multiple factors to go right. Many couples keep trying for years, and still, pregnancy does not occur. In your case, you have taken Unwanted-72 (Levonorgestrel), so there is a negligible chance of pregnancy. Do not take the stress and live your routine life. There is nothing to worry about, and do not panic. Kindly feel free to ask any questions or share any additional information.

Take care, and God bless.
