Why might someone not get their period despite taking an I-Pill after unprotected sex and experiencing withdrawal bleeding?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My girlfriend had her period in the second week of last month which lasted for three days. We had unprotected sex 11 days after her period, and she took an I-Pill just 10 minutes after the intercourse. She had bleeding four days after the incident which increased in the next four to five days. Her last menstrual cycle occurred after 27 days and hence, I expected her next period to be due in the first week of this month but till today she has not got her period. She said that she used to have one or two missed periods (amenorrhea) before and that it was normal but not frequent. Should we be worried about any chances of pregnancy?

One more thing I would like to add is that the same incident happened two months back (unprotected sex and intake of I-Pill within three hours followed by withdrawal bleeding after five to 10 days) but the difference from the current situation is that she got her next period on time. Since she has not got her period yet, we are worried. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query, and I can understand your concern.

Sometimes, periods might get delayed by one or two weeks because of hormonal changes caused by taking the pill. Also, she has experienced withdrawal bleeding, so there are more chances that she may get delayed periods. I suggest you wait for two weeks and during this period, she might get her period. So, there is nothing to worry about.

I hope this information helps you. Feel free to get back in case of any further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

So, I should wait till the last week of this month, right? Also, is there a need to do any urine pregnancy tests in between? Or do I wait for a full two weeks to see if her period arrives? Kindly let me know.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Glad to have you back.

Yes, you have to wait till the last week of this month and even then if she does not get her period, then do the urine pregnancy test. However, if you would like to check it now, then do a blood beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test to obtain clear results.

I hope you had a pleasant experience at icliniq.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I did the blood beta hCG test. Kindly check the result and advise if anything needs to be done.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), and there seems to be no possibility of pregnancy. So, no intervention is needed right now. She will get her period within two weeks.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you for the reply doctor,

My girlfriend had a two-day period, but the bleeding was not as heavy as in previous periods. Please advice on how to manage this.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If the flow fluctuates and the pad becomes completely soaked, it should be considered normal. Alternatively, if the flow is very light, I suggest she take syrup M2 (a non-hormonal menstrual modulator), two tablespoons twice daily. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Thank you.
