What is the treatment for persistent cough?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am having a cough for the past 20 days. I took many cough syrups but the problem persists. Now I am taking Clavam 625, Pan 40 mg and Grilinctus syrup. Phlegm gets stuck in the throat so I have to cough continuously to clear my throat. I get a cough quite easily and it does not go easily. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There are two types of coughing.

One is a dry cough which usually follows upper respiratory infections and it resolves over time and some medications could improve it and a wet cough which is most probably due to a chest infection. This is more serious than a dry cough if severity may require admission.

Please answer the following question in order to determine the diagnosis appropriately:

  • Is there any fever?
  • If there is a wet cough, what are the color of the phlegm and the amount?
  • Is there any change in the conscious level?

I suggest the following:

  • Continue the antibiotic you are taking for 10 days.
  • Acetylcysteine 600 mg sachets twice per day as an expectorant. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and with their consent take the medicines.
  • A chest x-ray will be very helpful.
  • Followup is required.
