Can a COVID-19 recovered patient get reinfected?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a recovered COVID-19 patient. I got recovered from this infection before a month. When I cross paths with a COVID-19 patient now, is there a chance for me to carry the virus again? I am asymptomatic now. Can I spread it to my family?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There are rare reports about the patients who contracted COVID-19 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) for a second time. You can have a development of immunity against this infection for at least six months. All the medical studies suggest that there is a post-infection immunity after a COVID-19 infection and you should be safe. Every day dozens of new studies are published and COVID-19 is still a developing event and knowledge may change suddenly. So my advice is based on the scientific knowledge present today. I am sure that these current studies are correct. Kindly avoid having stress and sports until eight weeks due to possible silent heart damage due to COVID-19 infection.
