Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 56 and recently tested positive for both influenza and COVID-19 at the same time, which frightened me. My symptoms are moderate, but I feel extremely exhausted and anxious about the condition worsening quickly.
Should a 56-year-old take Paxlovid if they test positive for both influenza and COVID-19?
Does Paxlovid help if influenza is also present?
Does it only target COVID-19?
Are there any interactions with influenza antivirals like Oseltamivir?
I am worried about rebound symptoms, side effects, and missing the right treatment window while also trying not to overmedicate.
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq. com.
I have read your query and am sorry for the discomfort.
Having both COVID-19 and influenza at the same time can make symptoms feel much worse and more exhausting, so it is understandable to feel anxious.
Nirmatrelvir and Ritonavir (Paxlovid) treat only COVID-19, not influenza, but they can still help reduce the risk of severe COVID-19 illness if started within five days of symptom onset, especially in people over 50 years of age or those with other health conditions.
Oseltamivir treats influenza, and it can usually be taken safely together with Nirmatrelvir and Ritonavir. The main concern with Paxlovid is that it can interact with many other medications, so a doctor or pharmacist should review the complete medication list first.
COVID-19 rebound can happen after taking Nirmatrelvir and Ritonavir, but it is usually mild and temporary. The medication still helps reduce the risk of serious illness in higher-risk individuals.
The best next step is to contact a doctor soon while still within the treatment window, so they can decide whether antiviral medications are appropriate based on symptoms, medical history, and current medications.
I hope this is clear, and if you have any questions at any time, please feel free to ask.
Thank you.
