Why did only one out of the eight lateral flow COVID tests show positive?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I carried out lateral flow tests regularly for COVID-19. Over the last few weeks my family has stayed at home for the holidays. Yesterday morning I did a positive test. I have since then tested myself 8 times and all are negative. I have no symptoms, I think the first test was a false positive as I had carried it out directly after eating buttered toast. As the lateral flow picks up proteins and fatty acids, the butter has activated it. There were crumbs on the swab on the first test. Have you heard of this triggering false positives? I work in infection control on microbiology, so I think I have a good understanding. Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. This can be false positive. There is no need to worry if you are asymptomatic. I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Can you send me picture of that positive report? Exactly how old is that report? Because asymptomatic carrier can transmit disease.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

What report should I attach?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I am asking to send me picture of your positive lateral flow test. Do you have them?

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I have attached the document. Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. I have gone through the images you have attached (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). First one is not clear cut positive. It is indeterminate you can say. Second one is 100 % negative. So I do not think you should consider the first one as positive. Are these Abbott test kits?

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I have done these 5 this morning, I think it is a false positive, the tests are Getein Biotech Inc.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com

All are negative. Do not worry about it.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

My daughter has quite bad asthma and my dad is 80 years old with asthma so just trying to ensure they are as protected as possible. That is why I take regular test.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Honestly speaking, you should test yourself only if you have symptoms like weakness or feverish feeling or cold or sore throat. In my clinical experience, best way to judge COVID infection is 6 minute walk test. I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I have 96% in my blood oxygen level.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

What is your oxygen saturation when walking?

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

My resting heart rate is 60 bpm, and oxygen saturation on rest 96% after walk 97% to 98%. Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Have you measured the total distance covered in 6 minutes walk test? Do you have smoking habit?

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I gave up smoking 15 years ago, I am 46 years old. I have a gym at home with a running machine and exercise bike. I have put on some weight since the pandemic but I am back training in the gym.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Yes, try to focus on diet and exercise. Do not take stress about COVID.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
