Is a root canal needed to replace an ill-fitting crown?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently got a crown on my upper incisor and canine. My incisor tooth was backward, so the dentist shortened my teeth, and then put a crown on my tooth attached to my canine. He also shortened my canine to fit the crown.

Still, the crown is big and bulky, and has a little gap, so I went to see another dentist. He said the crown has to be replaced, and he will do a root canal on both of my teeth, but I do not have any cavities or sensitivity. Is it necessary to have a root canal?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Canine is the cornerstone of the dental arch. Crown cutting was not necessary because your incisor looked sound. There is no need for crown cutting if you do not have any symptoms of pain or infection.

Yes, there is no need for a root canal, but the placed crown is not properly made nor cemented. It would be best if you asked your dentist why you required an RCT (root canal treatment). In my opinion, there is no need for RCT.

Hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
