Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 32-year old and do not take any medications. I have had sinus issues, a runny nose, and sinus congestion for the past few weeks. The cough and chest congestion has subsided. For the last few days, I have had a watery discharge sometimes when I bend over to do something. I believe it was only from my left nostril. It does not last long, maybe four to five drips. It also does not happen every time I bend over. I do not have a constant runny nose, either. I have read about CSF leaks and wanted to know if I should evaluate it or if this could be a common sinus infection symptom. I have had no recent head trauma or surgeries. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to iclinq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern. Your complaints of watery discharge from the nose can be either due to allergic rhinitis or CSF leaks, as you rightly said. Both can be differentiated easily. Discharge due to allergic rhinitis is sometimes accompanied by sneezing, itching, and a nose block. CSF (cerebrospinal fluid leak is asymptomatic and spontaneous, sometimes without any history of head injury. Next time you get this dribbling from your nose, collect it in a sterile bottle and send it for CSF analysis to identify the fluid and differentiate it from simple allergic nasal discharge. Even though asymptomatic, if the discharge is confirmed as CSF, it needs to be treated medically or surgically, depending on the cause of a leak in the nose. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
