How to manage a non-neoplastic cyst in my 1-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor

My one-year-old baby has a small non-neoplastic cyst on the right side of the neck, which was found in the biopsy report. It is a nodular mass measuring 8*8 mm. What is a cyst? Is there any chance for it to recur?

The nodular mass has been visible for the last month. Initially, an antibiotic for a week. But it did not reduce. So the doctor suggested getting it removed. Previously, the Novamox antibiotic was given. Other tests done were an ultrasound and a CBC.

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

A cyst is a fluid-filled cavity that can occur anywhere in the body. It can be cancerous (neoplastic) or non-cancerous. The pathology report gives the final diagnosis.

In your case, the pathology report clearly states that it is non-neoplastic. If the entire swelling has been removed for biopsy, it has been cured. If not, there is nothing to worry about as it is non-neoplastic.

Your baby may need another surgery only if the swelling becomes infected or painful or if it grows to a size that interferes with cosmesis. So, at present, nothing is to be done surgically.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
