Common "Deficient Mandible" queries answered by top doctors | iCliniq

Deficient Mandible

Mandibular hypoplasia is the small-sized lower jaw. It is also referred to as a deficient mandible. The mandible is retrognathic and micrognathic due to developmental anomalies. It is visible as a deficient ant posteriorly placed chin with dental crowding. The deficient mandible leads to airway compromise in some children due to the backward fall of the tongue while in a supine position. Micrognathia is most commonly noticed in class 2 dental malocclusion and mandibular deficiency syndrome. Myofunctional appliances and surgical corrections are the treatment options.
