Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I ended up in the ER last week with severe dehydration after food poisoning. It was scary. They gave me IV fluids and I felt better pretty quick, but now I am paranoid about staying hydrated. How much should I be drinking each day? I have heard everything from eight glasses to a gallon! And is water the only thing that counts, or do other drinks help too? Also, they gave me some kind of medicine to help with the nausea - can that cause dehydration too? I am trying to be more careful now, but it is hard to know if I am drinking enough. Are there any early warning signs of dehydration I should watch out for?
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I am glad to hear that you are feeling better after your recent experience with severe dehydration. Proper hydration is essential for maintaining good health. The general recommendation for daily fluid intake varies. The rule of thumb is to aim for about eight cups of water a day for most adults. However, individual needs can vary based on factors such as age, sex, weight, activity level, and overall health. Some suggest drinking half your body weight in ounces of water each day. Water is the best choice for staying hydrated, but other beverages and foods can also contribute to your fluid intake. Drinks like herbal teas, milk, and diluted fruit juices are good options unless otherwise contraindicated. Beverages containing caffeine, such as coffee and tea, can also contribute to your fluid intake, but they should be consumed in moderation since caffeine can have a mild diuretic effect.
Additionally, many fruits and vegetables have high water content and can help keep you hydrated. Examples include cucumbers, watermelons, oranges, and strawberries. Some anti-nausea medications can cause side effects such as dry mouth, which might make you feel less hydrated. However, they generally do not directly cause dehydration.
Early signs to watch for include:
It is better to sip water consistently rather than trying to drink a large amount all at once. Always remember, that a physical examination by a doctor in a hospital is a must for a comprehensive assessment. Feel free to follow up with any questions. Get well soon.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
