Could a UTI cause my missed period and vaginal itching?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My last period was a few months back, and I have not had a period since. I have not been sexually active, and a pregnancy test was negative.
A recent urine test showed a urinary tract infection (UTI). I have not experienced missing periods before, but I have had occasional vaginal itching and some delays in periods previously.
I am not taking any medications, have not engaged in any physical activities, and have not had a period for the past two months.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Since you have not been sexually active and your pregnancy test was negative, pregnancy is unlikely to be the cause of your missed periods. A two-month delay at your age can happen, but it still warrants evaluation.
Several factors can contribute to delayed menstruation, such as:
Hormonal imbalances, such as thyroid disorders or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Stress can affect your menstrual cycle.
Weight changes, either gain or loss.
Nutritional deficiencies that impact overall health.
Recent illness or infection that may temporarily disrupt periods.
Being underweight or having a BMI (body mass index) around 17.9 can interfere with normal cycle regulation.
A urinary tract infection usually does not directly stop periods, but the stress on your body could have an indirect effect. Since this is the first prolonged delay you have experienced, it is important to consult a gynecologist for a proper evaluation.
Your doctor may recommend blood tests to check thyroid function, prolactin levels, and reproductive hormones, along with a pelvic ultrasound and a review of your general health and nutrition.
In the meantime, focus on eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing stress. While occasional skipped periods are normal, missing periods for more than two months without pregnancy should be investigated.
I hope this information helps you.
Thank you.
