Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am eight days late for my period, and my pregnancy test is negative. My last period was a month ago and lasted for six to seven days. I am really worried.
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read the query and understand the concern.
A delay of eight days in menstruation with a negative pregnancy test is quite common. The most likely reason is delayed ovulation during this cycle.
Factors such as stress, hormonal fluctuations (such as early perimenopause or thyroid-related issues, although less likely at a younger age), illness, travel, or changes in sleep patterns can shift ovulation, which in turn delays the menstrual period. A negative pregnancy test at this stage is generally reliable.
I would suggest the following measures:
Repeat the pregnancy test after five to seven days if the period has still not started.
Monitor for additional symptoms such as breast tenderness, changes in vaginal discharge, or pelvic discomfort.
If menstruation does not occur within another week, further evaluation may be needed, including:
Pelvic ultrasound to assess the uterine lining and ovaries.
Blood tests such as prolactin and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels.
In most cases, no immediate treatment is required, as the menstrual cycle often corrects itself naturally. If needed, a short course of progesterone therapy, such as Medroxyprogesterone acetate, may be prescribed by a doctor to induce menstruation. For now, reducing stress and allowing some time for the cycle to regulate is advisable.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
