What are the causes of delayed periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female with a height of 160 inches and a weight of 115.4 lbs (pounds). Symptoms include headaches, cramping, and light-headedness. My concern is that I could be pregnant. Myself and my partner tried anal sex. He did not ejaculate. His penis slipped out a few times and grazed my vagina but never went in. We only did this for a few minutes. I was ovulating around this time as well. I am three days late on my period. I have been fasting for the last two weeks and have been eating significantly less and have dropped around four pounds over this span. This could be the cause of my delayed period, but I am not sure if I had lost enough weight to interrupt my cycle.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Kindly do a urine pregnancy test at home in the first ten days after your missed period. There could be other reasons as well for delay, but pregnancy has to be ruled out if periods are late by 10 days. Kindly follow up with the test results.

For your headache, kindly check your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is within the normal range, I suggest you take the tablet Paracetamol 650 milligrams 1 SOS (when needed) for a headache. Drink plenty of fluids orally and take rest. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him/her, and take the medicines with their consent.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
