Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My grandmother is 80 years old. Her hallucination has got increased with time in these past few years. I took her to the doctor. She examined her and told me that she is perfectly healthy in all bodily aspects. She had a mild kidney infection two times and treated it. Her hallucination seems to occur in pattern images like floors, tiles, countertops, and clothing. My doctor told me that she has dementia. Her short-term memory got faded and her aggression has also got increased. She rearranges her bedroom on daily basis. She has accusations of personal possessions being stolen by the persons in the bedroom. How to treat this condition? I need some advice.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Dementia with hallucinations occurs commonly in old age people. Intermittent episodes of delirium increase the future risk of having dementia. Commonly infections, electrolyte imbalance, hormonal imbalance, and drugs or recent surgery causes delirium. Dementia can also occur due to Alzheimer's disease or multi-infarct or Louie body or multisystemic atrophy. For delirium, she can take low doses of Benzodiazepines. She needs to do MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) brain, serum electrolytes, blood sugar, thyroid profile, and urine examination. It is necessary to consult a neurophysician for examination and the doctor treats her accordingly.
