Is it dangerous to have dengue fever for five days despite taking the treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister is 26 years old. She has been suffering from dengue for the past five days. She has got this fever for the second time now. The first time was eight years ago. Her platelet count today is 1.5 lakhs, PCV is 35 and WBC TC is 1800. She is being given saline along with Sumol, Ondem, Levazeo, and Milk of Magnesia. She is still having a fever of above 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Is her life in danger?

Hello,

Welcome to iclinq.com.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, and it can cause a wide range of symptoms, from mild fever to severe complications. The severity of dengue can vary from person to person and may depend on several factors, including previous exposure to the virus. The platelet count is essential in dengue cases, as the virus can cause a decrease in platelet levels, leading to bleeding problems. A platelet count of 1.5 lakhs (150,000) may still be within the normal range, but it is essential to monitor it closely, especially if the count continues to decrease. The treatment that your sister is receiving is perfect. There is nothing to modify. Fever lasts generally for seven days. After that, she will get itching all over her body. That is the recovery phase. Feel free to contact me for further queries.

Thank you.
